  • 16th Clowning and Caring in Costa Rica

“Discover one of the places we love to visit during the program.

La Carpio is surrounded by the Virilla River, the Torres River, the country’s most polluted river, a gravel pit, and the largest landfill servicing the entire central valley area. Here is where thousands of refugees from Nicaragua have settled. They arrived through the years for a variety of reasons including, the devastation of a civil war, the destruction of natural disasters and the desperation of poverty that led to hunger.
The community counts around 35,000 residents, living conditions are hard, violence, drug abuse and alcoholism are daily challenges, and – although a lot has been done by humanitarian organisations – there is still a lot to do to provide adequate health care education and employment. But the people who made it to La Carpio are resilient, strong and resourceful.

In 2008, Gesundheit! Institute started Clowning & Caring in Costa Rica and has brought clown activists on the streets of La Carpio ever since. The most beautiful and powerful connections have been ma
de with the residents through play, love and care.

And over the years a desire to deepen those connections arose and became more concrete in 2014, when for the first time, in addition to the clown visits, we brought teachers to offer free daily workshops to the people in La Carpio throughout the week of the clown trip. Children, teenagers and women have engaged storytelling, percussions, clowning and theater, and at the end of the program have performed in front of the community and the clowns, in an exchange of creativity, stories and care that made all the ones involved dream bigger.”

  • 5th Annual Gesundheit! Clown Trip to Cuba!

A return to where it all began. A reunion with Oops’ Cuban clown family.

ABOUT
Oops!

Oops was born in the heart of a 15 year old high school student in the madness of her first job… as a supporting party clown. Within a year she had become the lead clown in the company and was employed to play countless characters from Christmas elves, broken toy soldiers, Alice in Wonderland, a saloon girl, an ethnically inappropriate Jasmin, and everything in between. But her clowning achievement was being the clown for every Houston Astros’ home game and event for 3 years.

Oops didn’t dream of being a party clown for her whole life. She has life goals! So off she went to college…. And graduate school. This time was marked with little formal clowning, but the clown inside never quiets. Any worthwhile charity event could, and did, often become her informal stage where she would wander among the people with her endearing clumsiness to delight hearts and make balloons.

In 2025 with a heart focused on using joy for healing the world, Oops co-founded an activist clown troupe in Los Angeles in February 2025 known as S.P.O.R.K. (Street Performers Of Radical Komedy). S.P.O.R.K. attends rallies, marches, vigils, and direct actions while bringing their unique forms of chaotic joy everywhere they go, from the Metro to the Frontline! A new fire had been lit in the heart of Oops, so once again, clowning became a necessity of everyday life. The world still needs healing! So in December of 2025 Oops flew to Cuba and discovered first hand, the absolute magic of hospital and humanitarian clowning. Now, she views every moment as an opportunity to sprinkle the world with clown magic as she searches for her next healing trip… and how to facilitate it as her life mission.
